Gerald C. Sloat - Boulder Injury Attorney
Gerald Sloat received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester, his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law and began practicing law in New York City. He moved to Boulder Colorado in 1971.
Mr. Sloat has over 40 years of experience practicing personal injury law in Colorado. He has been awarded the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by a national rating process and has been selected as a Colorado “Super Lawyer”.

P. Randolph Nicholson - Boulder Injury Attorney
Randolph Nicholson graduated from the University of Connecticut, cum laude, in 1976 with a degree in Business Administration. He attended graduate business school and received a J.D. from the University of Connecticut Law School in 1980.
Following graduation from law school, Mr. Nicholson practiced personal injury and workers compensation law. He moved to Colorado in 1984 and became a partner in the firm Salmon, Godsman & Nicholson in 1989. He joined Gerald Sloat’s firm in Boulder in 2001.
Mr. Nicholson is admitted to the bar in Colorado and Connecticut, the Colorado Federal District Court and the Federal Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has numerous published appellate decisions and served on The Board of Directors of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association for 17 years. Mr. Nicholson’s resume reflects his legal experience and his professional credentials.
Robert S. Hoover - Boulder Injury Attorney
Robert Hoover graduated from the University of Colorado in 1989 with a degree in history. He received his Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois in 1993.
Following graduation from law school, Mr. Hoover worked for insurance defense law firms defending medical malpractice and motor vehicle negligence claims. In 2004, Mr. Hoover relocated to the mountains of Colorado, where he developed a successful construction defects, personal injury and contested probate practice while as a member of Sherman & Howard, LLC. He joined Sloat & Nicholson, P.C. in March of 2013 and became partner in 2014.
Mr. Hoover is admitted to practice in Colorado and Illinois, the United States District Court for Colorado, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Hoover’s resume reflects his legal experience and professional credentials.
Stephanie Sandler - Paralegal
Stephanie Sandler was born and raised in the mid-west and attended Kansas University. She moved to Boulder in 1971 and began working with Gerald Sloat in 1977. In the 1980s she was the co-owner of a small business and returned to full time work at the law firm in 1992. She is a legal assistant at the law firm, a member of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association and attends legal education programs on a regular basis.
Ursula Cabanig - Litigation Paralegal
Ursula was born and raised in Stockton, California where she lived with her three daughters and grandson. She graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in Human Services and attended Humphrey’s College and School of Law for her undergraduate work in paralegal studies. While in California she worked as a legal assistant and paralegal for over twenty years. She relocated to Colorado in 2012 and joined Sloat & Nicholson as our litigation paralegal.
Ivy Rain - Paralegal
Ivy was born in Massachusetts and lived in New York, Texas and Ohio before attending the University of Arizona in Tucson. After graduating with degrees in Geology and Chemistry, she came to Boulder in 1996 and studied Psychology at C.U. while working as a counselor at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and Boulder County Mental Health. Ivy received her Paralegal degree in 2010 and joined Sloat & Nicholson in 2012.
Marla Halligan - Paralegal
Marla was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She obtained her Paralegal degree in 1996 from National American University and also holds a Master’s degree in Management. Prior to relocating to Boulder and joining Sloat & Nicholson, PC in July 2013, she worked as a Paralegal in South Dakota, Illinois and Arizona.
Susie Averbeck - Office Manager
Susie Averbeck was born and raised in Wisconsin. She lived in Florida, Hawaii, and New Zealand before arriving in Colorado in 2005. She joined Sloat & Nicholson, PC in 2006 as the firm’s office manager and bookkeeper. Susie graduated from Concordia University in St. Paul Minnesota in 2009 with a Marketing Management degree, and is a medical Certified Professional Coder with the American Academy of Professional Coders since 1998.
Lydia Thompson - Receptionist
Lydia Thompson was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Boulder and Niwot, Colorado. She is a graduate of Colorado University and taught English in Japan for two years and Colorado public schools for two years. She is the firm’s receptionist and also works as a legal assistant. Lydia has been employed by Sloat and Nicholson, P.C. since 2007.
