How to Prepare for a Legal Consultation

A free legal consultation is an opportunity to go over your case with a prospective attorney. This helps you understand how laws, legal precedents, evidence, and other aspects affect your claim. Most consultations last between 30 minutes and 1 hour which means you want to make the most of every minute. To that end, we recommend the following as you prepare for your appointment.

Gather Your Documents

You should gather, organize, and make copies of all the documents related to your case. This includes all medical records, photographs, police reports, etc. The more organized your files, the easier it is for the attorney to understand the specifics of your case.

Honesty Is Always the Right Policy

Your attorney is your advocate, and in order for the attorney to provide reliable advice, you must be 100% honest during the legal consultation. It is important to remember that everything you discuss during your consultation is confidential. This means that the attorney may only discuss the conversation with others if they have your permission.

Prepare Your Questions & Take Notes

You will have plenty of questions during your legal consultation. Naturally, you will want to ask questions about legal precedents, likely outcomes,  costs, and how long the case may take. You will also want to discuss legal strategy and the attorney’s experience handling similar cases. Finally, you should know what support network of assistants, paralegals, experts, etc., that the attorney has to help pursue your claim.

It is a considerable amount of information to consider and you will want to take notes throughout the consultation. It is normal to consult with multiple attorneys before making a decision and your notes will help you determine which attorney is best able to pursue your claim.

Thoroughly Review Documents Before Signing

If you decide to hire the attorney to pursue your claim, you will want to thoroughly review all documents before you sign. You will want to make sure that you understand the services the attorney will provide, your obligations, and how expenses and fees will be handled. Your attorney should answer these questions and you should only sign when you are comfortable with the answers you receive.

We encourage you to contact Sloat, Nicholson & Hoover, P.C. at 303-447-1144 to schedule a free legal consultation. Our attorneys will be happy to answer your questions and go over the details of your case.
