Steps Cyclists Can Take to Protect Themselves While Riding

Cycling is a great way to stay healthy and enjoy the fabulous scenery around Boulder and the Front Range. As with any outdoor activity, there are steps cyclists can take to protect themselves from accidents and injuries. When practiced to the point of routine, the following actions can help ensure a safe ride whether you are on your way to work or heading into the hills for a weekend adventure.

Light It Up

Riders should always have a light and reflectors on their bicycle. This increases your visibility to motorists and other cyclists, and helps ensure that you can see the road ahead. It’s one of the best things you can do to prevent needing a bike accident lawyer down the road.

Don’t Drink and Ride

Contrary to popular myth, it is illegal to ride a bike under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Cyclists should never drink alcohol or smoke marijuana while on a ride.

Stay on the Path/Trail

There are thousands of miles of marked bicycle paths and trails around the Front Range. Riders should stick to these routes and avoid unmarked trails or traveling down roads where there is insufficient space to maneuver.

Stay Focused and Stay in Control

It is easy to get distracted while riding, but distraction can lead to disaster. Scenic views abound in Boulder, but these are best enjoyed while stopped safely out of the path of motorists and bicycle traffic. Even at low speeds, a moment of distraction is all it takes to lose control over the bike or veer into the path of an oncoming car.

Maintain the Bike

Bicycles need regular maintenance for safe operation. Before every ride, check the brakes, tires, lights, chain, and your helmet for damage. If these vital components are damaged or need service, perform the necessary repairs before heading out the door. It’s also advisable to affix a quick repair kit to your bike.

Adjust to Road Conditions

Slow down in heavy winds or when ice or snow are present. You should also slow down when passing through areas where pedestrians are present or when vehicular traffic starts to build up on the roadway.
