A woman finding ways to speed recovery.

Steps You Can Take To Speed Your Recovery

Whether you have experienced a motor vehicle accident or a sporting accident, your body will require time to heal following an injury. As frustrating as it is, there is no way to say, “My body will recover by x-date.” However, you can do things to help speed your recovery and give your body the best chance of healing.

Diet and Proper Nutrition Are Crucial

Comfort food may make you feel better, but it will do little to improve your health. Instead of reaching for the cakes and cookies, fill your diet with protein-rich foods. Meat and fish will help your muscles heal and your limbs regain their function.

It also helps if you eat plenty of Vitamin C and Omega-3 fatty acids. Dark leafy greens and citrus fruits are packed with Vitamin C, and this will accelerate collagen production. Salmon, sardines, soybeans, and walnuts are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids that will reduce inflammation.

And, don’t leave out Calcium-rich foods and Vitamin D if you have bone injuries. This will help facilitate bone growth and help you regain limb function as quickly as possible.

Finally, be wary of supplements. It’s always best to seek out the nutrients you need from whole, natural food sources.

Sleep Is Essential

It can be hard to sleep with an injury, but it is something you must do. Give your body time to rest and heal. Don’t try and return to a normal schedule until your body tells you it’s ready.

Physical Therapy Is Vital

You should seek out and secure the services of a licensed physical therapist. They can help customize a therapy plan based on your age, health, and extent of injuries. Most importantly, they can check your progress and keep you on track throughout the recovery process. Physical recovery is often a two-step forward, one-step-back process. It can be frustrating and demoralizing. Your physical therapist can help you navigate these hills and valleys.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

Physical recovery can be emotionally exhausting. Along with a physical therapist, it’s a good idea to seek out professional counseling to help you process the emotions that accompany physical injuries and disabilities following accidents.

At Sloat, Nicholson & Hoover, P.C., we understand that physical recovery takes time. As your body recovers, contact us and we will start the process of recovering the compensation you require to cover the cost of treatment.
